There are multiple etiological factors responsible for causing dandruff. This includes sebum, malassezia, immunological dysfunction, altered epidermal function, innate susceptibility etc.

The cell turnover time (a time taken by a skin cell to travel up from the innermost layer of the epidermis to the upper or outermost layer)is shortened. Normal cell turnover time is 25-30 days which is shortened to 5-15 days. Stratum corneum transit time is also decreased.

There are many treatment options available to treat the dandruff. Antifungal agents, anti inflammatory and keratolytics are used alone or in combination in the form of lotion or dandruff shampoo or dandruff medical shampoo.

I would not recommend using OTC anti dandruff shampoo as many of them are not dermatologically tested and cases of tolerance to anti dandruff shampoo observed in person using it on a regular basis.
