What is Pimple or Acne?
Pimples or acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition of the pilosebaceous unit which usually is self-limiting, very common in adolescents but can trouble a person of any age. It occurs when the production of oil (sebum) from the skin increases at puberty, the outbreak results from blockages in the opening of the hair follicle. Pimple can affect both male and female of any age with its prevalence as per the studies is 43% in males and 51% in females in an age group of 20-29 years, 20 and 35% in an age group of 30-39 years, 12 and 26% in an age group of 40-49 years and 7 and 15% in a people aged 50 or older in males and females respectively.
Among all the skin types, people with oily skin type are more prone to develop acne. Basically, there are four different types of acne or pimples namely, blackheads or open comedones, whiteheads or closed comedones, papules, pustules and nodules and are seen on sebaceous-gland rich areas of the body, mainly face, chest, shoulders, back and upper arms. There are multiple factors that contribute to etiopathogenesis and affect its severity including androgen activity, sebaceous hyperplasia, altered cornification and differentiation of keratinocytes (skin cells) and inflammatory response.
